Magnolia Golf Club held the Holiday Junior Golf Classic of 2004 originally started by the respected golf pro Mr Lewis Smither II for the sixth year running.
Less contestants than last year, but still a respectable turnout. The two-day tournament was just as challenging as ever.
The winners were (i) 10 & under - Ben Weston 221. (ii) Girls - Lauren Smith 162; (iii) 12-13 John Livingstone 152; (iv) 14-15 Adam Stephenson 147 (v) 16-18 Phillip Mills 155; (vi) Overall winner (best score over 2 days) Adam Stephenson 147.
The well-known former world heavyweight boxing champion James 'Bonecrusher' Smith was present to give a welcoming and motivational speech to the contestants.
Several local businesses and golf courses in Wilmington showed an active interest in this year's tournament at Magnolia Golf Club by providing its contestants with a generous array of gifts such as rounds of golf from Inland Greens Golf Course, Lakes Golf Course, The Cape Golf and Racquet Club and also the beautiful Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation. Nevada Bob's sponsored a hole in one; Dick's of Wilmington, Piggly Wiggly (Warsaw),
Coca-Cola, Pizza Hut of Wallace, House of Raeford (Wallace), Merrita Bakery and Snapple all contributed. Four County Electric Power kindly supplied sleeves of balls for the contestants.
The Country Squire in Warsaw cooked for the first tournament day and provided special rates for the visiting families. Pizza Corner (Kenansville) prepared the second day's lunch.
The superb condition of the course and its fast greens add to Magnolia's increasing popularity. The overall consensus was that Magnolia is a fun and challenging course, providing a golfer with inspiration and enthusiasm for the game. Everyone who attended the tournament was delighted with the Southern hospitality and promised to come back soon having discovered once again that there's more than immediately meets the eye in Duplin County North Carolina.
