Ravi & Shalup accept the check on behalf of Direct Relief International

The North Carolina Tsunami Relief Golf Tournament held at Magnolia Golf Course, Magnolia, Duplin County, NC-28453. 4th March 2005

The weather was cool, but sunny and mainly still; a very pleasant change from the preceding cold and windy days. 56 golfers formed 14 teams who played "best ball". The winning team shot 56 led by Billy Duncan, with Joey Brennan, John Bullard and Scott Robinson, who won a round of golf each at Pinehurst #8 course. Among other notable shots, Billy Duncan shot a hole-in-one on the #2 hole and won a trip to Hiltonhead for two.

The Wallace-Rose Hill High School Golf Team of 13 students led by the coach Mark Stamp came to help make the golf course look perfect, before during and after the tournament, cleaning, preparing and clearing up afterwards.

We were honored by the presence of State Representative Russell Tucker who spoke to the contestants before tee-off with a motivational speech and prayer.

Miss North Carolina USA 2005, Chelsea Cooley, also honored us by visiting with her mother, Jackie Cooley. Chelsea was gracious, gorgeous and perfectly poised as she encouraged the contestants and later gave out the prizes. She and her mum were personal sponsors of the tournament, donating their time and considerable energy to this good cause. She was presented with a lovely Indian necklace, made in Pondicherry, India; a town hard-hit by the tsunami.  Chelsea will compete in the Miss USA 2005 pageant this April and takes our best wishes and votes with her!. [She won! And is now known as Miss USA 2005!]

Charlie Albertson, State Senator of the 10th District of North Carolina came to cheer on the contestants and promised help for future charitable tournaments.

Mayor Batten of Warsaw was kind enough to visit and assist with the prize giving, representing Duplin County. He honored the contestants and sponsors saying that this kind of event was unusually successful at raising money in Duplin County.

The tournament raised four thousand two hundred and twenty-three dollars ($4,223) which will be disbursed to the tsunami victims by way of 'Direct Relief International' who are taking no administration fees for this fund. Tel.: 805-964-4767 Fax: 805-681-4838 www.directrelief.org. The giant check in the photographs was made out just before an unexpected and wonderful private anonymous cash donation of $500. The check was sent to Direct Relief on 11 March 2005.

Ravi Jenkal and his associate Shalup came as representatives to accept the check on behalf of their country, India, one of the hardest hit by the disaster. They are Ph.D. students at the North Carolina State University in Raleigh We expect to hold this charity fund-raiser every year, as the hard- hit countries will need help to recover for a long time.
