The occasion was a sad one for many, being the funeral service at the First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church in Raleigh of Dr. Archie D. Logan, a wonderful teacher and dear friend of many. Dr. Logan had stated his intention to partner and participate with The Sanctuary Project, and Dr. Everett stated his intention to carry forward Dr. Logan's wishes.

THE SANCTUARY PROJECT The American Legion Auxiliary unit post 156 at Wallace held their monthly meeting on September 1, 2009. Kip Tomkin was our guest speaker. She is an excited woman with a vision of hope. After spending a couple of minutes with her, you will catch her enthusiasm for a project that is dear to her heart. This project came about during a close personal experience in her life. In a time of grief Kippie stepped back and asked herself "What can I do to help others who are in need of my help?" She was answered and out of her prayers came "The Sanctuary Project ".
Kippie sees this as an enormous opportunity to give back to those who served in war for us to be free. Kippie has approximately 170 acres of land. It borders NC 903, and the #373 exit at 1?40. This is the prime location for a Wounded Veterans Recovery Center: it is between the major military bases in Eastern N.C.
Our beloved men and women who fought for our country both need and deserve this project to come full circle! Coming back from war is hard enough in itself. Take a walk in their boots, after returning home from fighting they desperately search for a doctor It could take 18 months just to get an appointment. Next a plan of travel would have to be set in motion that takes hours to get there. And possibly have to make lonesome dove trip. The Sanctuary Project is a one-of-a-kind military prototype. The Wounded Veterans Center will enable our service men and women to have everything they need to make a complete recovery all in one place. A Large hospital facility will be built. Here our soldiers will be able to heal physically, mentally and spiritually. As citizens aren't we obligated to help each and every veteran that has made it home?! Do we think of our freedom as them going off to war, coming home and then being forgotten? Duplin County will be the future home of both veterans and their families. Some pieces of land will be sold commercially so homes can be built to house our heroes. This will allow spouses and/or children to be close by and assist as our soldier fully recuperates.
This will quicken the recovery process because a burden has been lifted from their minds. Also, The Sanctuary Project includes a Senior Citizens Day Care Facility. Our seniors will have of day of pampering at the spa. They can be brought by their children whom they live with and picked up later in the afternoon. Tins allows the caregiver to keep working and feel secure knowing their parent is getting properly taken care of. Seniors can reminisce with each other about the golden days as they stroll down the nature trail. Or they can scoot over to the Daycare facility and have lunch with their precious grandchild. More plans have been made to include a sports center, Skate Park, Cinema, a bowling alley and yet still an indoor/outdoor swimming pool. Are you catching a glimpse of why Kippie is excited yet?! From these plans come forth many jobs that will need to be filled so this project can begin. This will put Duplin County on the map so to say. Kip Tomkin has plans to pursue her vision all the way to the top by continuing to draft letters from here to the President of the United States. Just a couple of her local supporters are Heather Beard, Ex. Dir., Duplin County EDC. Heather states that it is refreshing to see a company still interested in growing and creating jobs for its community. Heather feels it will be a big impact on a large scale. Everyone will benefit and alleviate some of the problems our county is facing.
Rev. Mary Bass, M. Div., MSW LCSW also believes in the vision of Sanctuary Project. Kips property could not be used in a better way. As a fellow landowner Mary and several generations of her family applaud Kippie's decision to stand up and give a tiny voice to a huge groundbreaking miracle. Letters of support are pouring in from the Lt. Governor of NC, NC State Representative, our very own Senator and Mayor. More is expected to follow. We could all learn a lesson from Kip Tomkin. Just think for a second ... if you could not serve in the military but still wanted to serve your country and fellowman ask yourself "what can I do right now to volunteer?" I have 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week, is it possible I could deliver an elderly person a meal, or drive my veteran to a doctor's appointment? Whatever is laid upon your heart to do ? please accept my challenge and cheerfully volunteer to The Sanctuary Project This is a vision of hope for a future of spectacular rewards that will come in more ways than one. This can become a legacy to pass on to generations of so many to come.
